Information about Charity Walk, Run and Bike Events

May 2007 is National Arthritis Month. The Arthritis Foundation has held many walks to raise both funds and awareness about the disease. Many may not know that this year alone, almost a million people will be diagnosed with arthritis. Just walking is a critical factor in preventing and managing arthritis. The Arthritis Foundation says “Americans cannot afford not to get moving.”
Fortunately many people have put on their walking shoes already, as thousands of people participated in arthritis walks in their communities earlier this May, helping to raise over $6 million to date. The Arthritis Foundation aims to raise $10 million. Fall arthritis walks are planned in over 60 communities. To learn more about upcoming walks, visit the Arthritis Foundation website.

The San Diego, CA chapter held a walk along the San Diego coastline. “This was our fifth annual walk in San Diego. We had about 500 participants. and it has just gone up from last year in participation and it continues to grow.” said Allison Adams, Community Development Coordinator for the San Deigo Chapter.

The South Texas Chapter also was very pleased with its turnout and fund-raising for the Austin walk held on May 19th. Especially for a new event for the chapter. “Our walk was extremely successful for a second year event. Last year we raised over 40 thousand dollars with about 200 participants. This year we raised more than 60 thousand with more than 300 participants. We’re looking forward to year three and more participants and more money to support prevention and control of arthritis.” said Laura Baker, Special Events and Programs Director, South Texas Chapter.
