daffodilMarie Curie Cancer Care is best known for their network of nurses working in the community to provide end-of-life care for patients in their own homes. They have 10 hospices across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. and run the world-renowned Marie Curie Research Institute, which investigates the causes and treatments of cancer.

The Great Daffodil Appeal raises funds to support the charity and its programs.

Several Daffodil walks took place during the month of March, including one in Sunderland. There’s another walk coming up in Northern Ireland on April 26 called the Devoted to Life Walk.

Marie Curie also has a program that lets you choose your own “ultimate challenge.” With running events, swimming, cycling, marathoning, parachuting, and international events like the Kilimanjaro trek, there’s something for everyone.

The Gaylord Memory Walk/Swim/Skate for Alzheimer’s held on Saturday, November 10th at the Otsego County Sportsplex in Gaylord, Michigan has raised $2,000 more than last year, and funds are still coming in. The event has raised $12,174 so far. The committee anticipates reaching $15,000 as a potential fundraising goal.

November is National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. Approximately 100 to 150 people attended the Walk/Swim/Skate event held on Saturday morning. About 50 people attended Friday evening’s candlelight vigil, twice the amount that attended last year.

Collaborative partners at the event include Tendercare of Gaylord, Hospice of Michigan, Vital Care of Gaylord, Aspen Ridge Retirement Village, Wright and Filippis, Otsego Haus Adult Day Services, Otsego Memorial Hospital and Alzheimer’s Association Greater Michigan Chapter.

The 20th Annual Swim Across The Sound will be held on Wednesday, August 8th. The event begins in Port Jefferson, Long Island and ends in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Both solo swimmers and relay teams participate in the event. It is a race to the finish line. The event is supervised by many volunteers, both in and out of the water.

Four doctors from Norwalk Hospital will participate in the event. Dr. Patrick Nugent of Norwalk, CT, chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology; Dr. Elizabeth Sauter of Weston; Dr. Elisabeth Aronow of New Canaan; and Dr. Wolfgang Steinmann of Stamford will participate in the event. Dr. Elisabeth Aronow is now participating in Swim Across the Sound for the fifth time.

Swim Across The Sound was founded in 1987 in association with St. Vincent’s Medical Center. The charity was founded by a young man who lost his leg to cancer. Its mission is to raise awareness of the impact cancer could have on an individual and their families. They raise funds to help patients.
