15 brothers and sisters in Ireland are soon to become the largest number of siblings to compete in a marathon. The O’Donoghues will run the Dublin City Marathon in Dublin, Ireland on Monday, October 29th. Nine brother and six sisters are participating.

“It’s crazy because no member of our family has ever run or even walked a marathon before, so it is a huge challenge to undertake,” said Ruth O’Donoghue.

The family hopes to raise $50,000 for Down Syndrome Ireland while running the marathon. Their nephew Mark was born with Down Syndrome.

The siblings Siblings Noel, Mary, Therese, Adelaide, Pa, Margaret, Willie, Kieran, Joe, Robert, Cronan, Jimbob, Brenda, Kevin and Louise are between the ages of 32 and 52. They decided to aim for the Guinness World Records when the youngest family member received a copy of Guinness World Records for Christmas and noticed the listing for the largest number of siblings to run a marathon.

A charity relay race will be held at Johnny Unitas Stadium Saturday, September 22nd in the evening. This year more than 300 student athletes are expected to participate. 175 students are from Towson University and 125 are from the University of Delaware. Funds raised from the relay race will benefit the Special Olympics Chapters for Delaware and also for Maryland.

The football game-ball will be held during the relay. It will be held by the student runners for approximately 58 miles during the relay race.

The relay event was also held last year when Towson University played the University of Delaware in a football game. That event also benefited the Special Olympics chapters in both respective states.

“We have broken the athletes up into three squads of runners. Each group will cover 10 miles and each athlete is expected to run one mile, but they can run the mile they are assigned and then any additional ones before or after that that they want,” Tversky said.

Donations are still being accepted, $18,000 has been raised to date. $9,852 from the University of Delaware and $8,324 from Towson University.
