This unusual story came across Yahoo News today…

He has flippers instead of feet — and certainly no sneakers or hiking boots. But that didn’t stop a sea lion from joining schoolchildren on a walk-a-thon.

The marine mammal apparently noticed children doing laps Friday morning around a course they had set up at the Marin Country Day School next to the shores of the San Francisco Bay. The 185-pound Steller sea lion waddled ashore, shocking students and teachers.

“He did a whole lap,” said Kelly Watson, director of constituent relations and web communications at the private school.

Relay for Life is an all night walk-a-thon that benefits cancer research, advocacy and support programs. The program began in 1986 as a benefit for a local chapter of the American Cancer Society. It was later adopted on a national level and relays were planned for many cities all across the United States.

Relay has grown to an international level with events taking place all over the world to benefit other cancer related charities.

The 14th annual Revlon Run/Walk for Women will benefit the Entertainment Industry Foundation. To date close to $45 million dollars have been granted by the foundation toward cancer research, advocacy and outreach.

This year Revlon Spokesperson Sheryl Crow will host the event, along with Michael Chiklis and Mandy Moore. Read more… »

Did you know that the oldest continual charity walk in the US benefits hunger relief efforts in Massachusetts? This year is the 39th such walk and will take place this Sunday May 6, 2007. The 20-mile walk begins at the Boston Common Parade Grounds at 7:00 AM and ends at 7:00 PM

In 2006 over $3.2 million was raised. Each year over 95,000 people participate in the event either as walkers or volunteers. In this one day, The Walk for Hunger provides fund needed to support 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, food banks, and food salvage programs in 135 communities throughout Massachusetts.

There are many great fundraising ideas for Relay for Life Events. Most teams do fundraising for the weeks or months leading up to Relay. Teams that have been participating for years may even start fundraising for the next relay as soon as the last one is over.
