Don’t Get Lost in Details

I have a tendency to over-plan and over-think whatever project I’m working on at the moment. My husband would probably say I’m a bit anal-retentive, I just like to think of it as being extremely organized. He is a more casual person, and doesn’t do much pre planning. He thinks leaving for the airport 1 hour before your flight leaves is just fine – drives me crazy.

Italian Dinner Party Music
I had purchased a few Italian style decorations for our Team in Training Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser, to put around the house for a more festive atmosphere. The company I purchased the supplies from also had a Italian Dinner Party Music CD that I decided to purchase. I had planned on playing the CD during the night of the party. I had been listening to the CD all week, as I was preparing for the spaghetti dinner, to help get me in a festive mood.

O Sole Mio
The CD contains songs such as Volare, Mambo Italiano, O Sole Mio, That’s Amore and more. I originally placed my CD player in the kitchen, but decided I needed more room for all the food we were serving, so I moved the CD to our living room, behind the table where the Chinese Auction Prizes were set up. I couldn’t see the CD player, so of course I totally forgot about the CD on the night of the party. The party was a huge success despite the lack of music, and I don’t think anyone would have heard the music even if I put it on, with all the talking that was going on.

It’s Not a Grand Opening
Right before our guests were scheduled to arrive for the dinner, I was trying to figure out exactly when to put all the food out. I didn’t want anything to get cold before people were ready to eat. I had the tomato sauce and Alfredo sauce in a couple of crock pots to keep them hot. My husband said no one was going to complain and ask for a refund if the pasta was a little bit cool. We were hosting a charity fundraising event, not having the grand opening of a restaurant. He’s a laid back kind of guy, guess that’s why he’s the supervisor for the company he works for. Somedays it sounds like he works for a pre-school full of children, and not an electrical company. But he always remains calm. I guess I’m just a drama queen or something, but I want everything to be perfect, always – that’s not very realistic.

Enjoy the Party
Life is too short to worry about tiny details. If in the long run you are having fun, and raising a few dollars for charity, don’t worry if your event didn’t go exactly as planned. I still have people coming up to me saying what a great time they had at the spaghetti dinner and wanting to know when our next party is going to be. So I’m going to work on being more relaxed for our next fundraising event, and not worry about every little detail. But that Italian Dinner Party Music CD still mocks me every time I enter my home office.

Take care,
