Outrun the Sun Race Against Melanoma
Outrun the Sun, Inc. is a non-profit organization devoted to building awareness, creating opportunities for education and raising research funds for melanoma and other skin cancers. By spreading the word about preventative measures through programs such as their Education/Outreach Awards they strive to reduce incidence rates of the disease. Their National Melanoma Research Scholar Program is one way they support young melanoma researchers and aid in the development of treatments and discoveries that take us one step closer to finding a potential cure.
In 2005 the organization started the Outrun the Sun (OTS) Race Against Melanoma and it is still going strong raising over $300,000 to date. All race donations go directly to support melanoma research and educational programs. In addition to raising funds this event involves the community and provides educational information about skin cancer prevention.
What makes this event so special? Well, first of all it takes place in the evening to protect runners from the sun’s harmful rays. Participants also have lots of options to choose from. This event includes a 5K competitive timed run, a 5K non-competitive run/walk and a 1-mile family fun walk. Participants can join in the Sunset Festival after the race for food, music and activities for the kids.
The next OTS Race Against Melanoma will take place in Indianapolis, Indiana on Saturday, June 6th, 2009. There are plans to have a Chicago race, but no date has been set yet.
