Racing for Recovery Events

ABOVE: Todd Crandell

Todd Crandell, is the founder and executive director of the non-profit Racing for Recovery Foundation. Crandell, a former drug and alcohol addict, formed Racing for Recovery™ in 2001. According to the foundation’s website, the foundation has a “mission of preventing substance abuse in adolescents and individuals and offering a positive alternative to those currently battling addiction.”

The foundation raises funds in a variety of ways, including the entry fees they collect from the running and triathlon events the foundation conducts every year. The foundations first 5K race took place in 2002, in Todd’s hometown Sylvania, Ohio. Since that first race, the foundation hosts various 5K run/walks, 10K run/walks and half triathlons throughout the United States.

Racing for Recovery Book & DVD
My husband is a recovering alcoholic, and took his last drink almost 13 years ago. He is now addicted to cycling events of all kinds. Todd emailed me to inquire if I would be interested in reviewing his book Racing for Recovery (Breakaway Books, 2006). As his story was quite similar to my husband’s story, I contacted him right away to find out more information.

I just wrote a review of Todd’s book, Racing for Recovery; From Addict to Ironman, for the Suite101 website. The book details Todd’s addiction and how he used training for an Ironman triathlon to help him with his recovery efforts.

ESPN did a very nice story on Todd, and his participation in the Ironman Austria triathlon, which aired on August 19, 2007. Both the Racing for Recovery book and Addict: Racing for Recovery documentary can be purchased on the Racing for Recovery™ website.

Todd currently lives in Ohio with his wife and four children.
