Review of PowerBar Gel Blasts
My husband and I have been a big fan of PowerBar products for a number of years. We go through TONS of PowerBar gel packs every time we go out for a long bike ride. A few weeks ago, the employees of our local Bike America store told us about a new PowerBar product they were waiting to get in stock - PowerBar Gel Blasts.
It was serendipitous that, one week later, I was contacted by a rep for PowerBar wanting to know if I would like to receive samples of any of their PowerBar products to review on my Bike Diva site. I didn’t know what samples were going to be sent, so I was pleasantly surprised to see a few packages of the new PowerBar Gel Blasts included along with the other product samples.
If you are a fan of Clif Bar Shot Bloks, then you should try the PowerBar Gel Blasts. Both products have the consistency of a soft gummy bear. The PowerBar Gel Blasts have an added surprise, when you bite into the center of the energy chew, you get a blast of liquid gel. According to the gel blasts package they “provide fast energy to muscles in an optimized carb blend.” The package suggests consuming 2 gel blasts every ten minutes depending on workout intensity. Consumption of PowerBar Gel Blasts should be followed by a few ounces of water.
I can’t stop every ten minutes, while riding my bike, to refuel. If I was coordinated, I could eat while on my bike, but that just sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. I have to wait until my next scheduled rest stop and consume approximately half the package at one time, followed by around 8 ounces of water. If you are a runner, you can just nibble on a gel blast whenever you feel the need. Triathletes could use the gel blasts during their cycling and running workouts.
PowerBar Gel Blasts are currently available in two flavors, caffeine free lemon and 2x caffeine cola. I prefer the caffeine free lemon flavor, but I’m sure my husband, AKA Mr. Coffee, will go for the cola flavor with their extra blast of caffeine. Each package contains approximately 9 blasts.

My husband and I are doing a 82 mile training ride with our Team in Training cycle team on Sunday. We will be bringing along the Gel Blasts and other PowerBar products with us to share with our team members. The team will be riding 102.4 miles on October 26th at the 20th Intracostal Century Ride in Cocoa Beach. The average cyclist will burn between 5,000 and 8,000 calories during a ride of this length. It’s really important to keep ingesting calories during such a long ride, in order to keep our energy levels up and our electrolyte levels normal.
I’ll be carrying along a few packs of PowerBar gel packs and PowerBar Gel Blasts with me during the century ride. And if my husband is nice to me, I might even share my PowerBar stash with him. Ask your local biking or sporting goods store if they plan on carrying PowerBar Gel Blasts.
Take care,
Lynn Smythe AKA the Bike Diva
