World Run Day 2008

My travels and my experience living abroad have taught me a lot about fitness from an international perspective. One of those things is that running is part of almost every culture in the world. Visit a park or community area in nearly any city and you will find people of all ages running for fitness and health.

Since 1999 an exciting event has used this international love of running to support charities across the globe. The 10th Annual World Run Day will take place on November 9th. This grassroots event brings people together with a common goal to run and raise money for a variety of charity organizations.

The event began with 100 runners in 75 cities and by 2007 expanded to 2500 runners world-wide. As of October 29th, 1200 runners were already pre-registered in the US alone. Events supporting World Run Day range from a 50 yard dash to marathons.

These are a few components of the World Run Day mission:

  • Promote the health benefits of running for people of all ages.
  • Promote the support of a charity by raising funds or making personal donations on this day.
  • Provide support for running and access to running events in communities.

You can participate in the event in several ways and there are no rules for what charity you support.

Host an event in your community. This can be as simple as getting a group of runners together for the morning or making it an organized race. Tools for event directors are even available for those who need a little help.

Participate in an organized World Run Day event in your area. Cities around the world will be offering these events on this day.

No organized groups near you? Run on your own and make a donation to your favorite charity.

Don’t like to run or are unable to? No problem. Everyone is welcome! The program also supports walking or wheelchair events that honor the day and raise funds.

Interested in getting involved? Those living in the US and international participants can register online. If signing up for an organized event, check with the coordinator as they may be taking care of the registration for you.
