Fundraiser
Dear Event Planner:
Would you like to capitalize on one of the hottest fitness and
fundraising trends? Every year the number of charity athletic
events grows and with good reason! They're fun, exciting ways
for people to improve their health through exercise and
support a worthy charity at the same time.
According to the Run Walk Ride Fundraising Council, over 12
million people participate in these events every year. And
that's just the top 30 nationally ranked programs!
There's still lots of room for new events, especially when you
use the creative techniques we teach you in this book.
You'll get access to the same strategies that have worked in
our own experience, plus tips from other successful event planners.
Who are we and why should you listen to us?
Between us we have personally planned
dozens of competitive running events and casual walk-a-thons.
We know how what potential participants are looking for -- what
will draw them out to come to your event. We also know how exhausting
planning such an event can be! So we've included many tips that
will save you time, effort and reduce stress.
As health advocates, we believe in the many benefits of community
athletic events. It's a great way to bring people together in
your community for a fun event. Families, avid runners, walkers,
weekend warriors or even people who just want to have a good
time will come out for your event.
You can promote health, fitness and publicize
your cause all while raising funds that you need to keep your
mission going. That's right... a run or walk can be fun
but it has to make money! So we've included a lot of
information in this book on how to maximize your fundraising
results.
Lori Rice has a Master's degree in Nutritional Sciences
and a Bachelor's degree in Nutrition, Fitness and Health.
Throughout her 10 years of work in the field, she has served
as race coordinator for several 5K run/walk events. As former
program coordinator of a university-based, statewide physical
activity campaign, she has assisted community organizations
with program development and local fitness event planning.
Carrie Hill spent five years as Southern Utah Regional Director
of the Alzheimer’s Association. While there she organized
the annual Memory Walk and other fundraising events. She
still serves on the local Alzheimer’s Association’s Advisory
Council and continues to participate in Memory Walk every
year.
You'll
discover these success secrets:
Increase the number of participants in your run or walk
with our proven marketing strategies - advertising,
publicity and online promotion.
Find
the volunteers you need, match them to the right
tasks so they'll happily help out at your event year after
year using our unique volunteer personality profile system.
Decrease expenses and maximize revenues by
"piggybacking" on to other events in your area.
Get donations: corporate sponsors, goodie bag items,
t-shirt sponsors, food and beverages for before/after the
race and water stations.
Recruit and motivate teams and individuals to get
donations for your charity, exact tips you can give them
to raise more money.
The complete logistics of planning a run or walk
-- from registration to timing procedures for the finish
line, we show you how!
Toolkit with editable forms will
save you hours of work!
In addition to the step-by-step guidebook you will
also get a variety of forms, checklists and other tools.
These will save you many hours of work. Instead of having
to create these from scratch and do a lot of guesswork
about how to set them up, these forms give you a great
place to start.
You'll get PDF versions of some of these so you can
just print them out and go. You also get editable documents
in Word and Excel so that you can tweak them to fit
your own circumstances.
Master checklist - Remember all the important
details by using this checklist to guide you throughout
event planning.
Race day checklist - Handy list just for the
race day itself. Add special notes and names of people
who will be responsible for each item, so nothing gets
left out!
Registration form - A sample form you can edit
for your event. Add your own event information or just
use as an example to get you started.
Waiver
of liability form - A must have for any race! This
basic sample shows you what should be included in a
waiver.
Spreadsheets - Enter registrations as they come
in, makes it easy to sort by T-shirt size (for ordering)
or race categories.
Self
assessment tool - Use this worksheet after the event
to evaluate its performance. Make note of what to do
and not do next year, planning ahead for your
future success!
If you've never planned a run or walk or run before, this
is the best place to start. OK, we might be a little
biased here. But we've also been in your shoes -- planning
a race from scratch and having no guide to follow. What a
nightmare! No one should have to do that!
For experienced race planners, there are also many ideas
to take your event to the next level. From volunteer management
to new strategies for fundraising in tough economic times,
there's much to be gained here.
